A divorce is the process of dissolving (ending) your marriage. In order to divorce in England and Wales the marriage has to have irretrievably broken down i.e. there is no hope of reconciliation.
The person who starts the divorce is known as the Applicant and their spouse is the Respondent.

If you and your partner own a property together, such as the matrimonial home, or you have savings and /or pensions, consideration will need to be given as to how these assets should be divided between the two of you.

Making arrangements for children when a relationship breaks down can be very difficult. Following your separation from your partner or spouse you may have agreed who the children will live with and arranged their contact with the parent they do not live with. Sometimes, however, such arrangements are not straight forward and the living arrangements for the children cannot be agreed upon. We can provide legal advice and help you to reach an agreement.

An increasing number of couples are choosing to simply live together (cohabit) rather than getting married. Problems arise when unmarried couples separate as they do not have the same legal rights as married couples have against each other.
If you own your own home and your partner has moved in, or is about to move in, you should consider having a Living Together Agreement.
